郎世寧(西元一六八八-一七六六年),意大利人。十九歲成為天主教耶穌會的修士,學習了繪畫和建築。二十七歲來到中國,歷任康熙、雍正和乾隆三朝的宮廷畫家,擅長畫人物、犬馬和花鳥。
這幅描繪孔雀在花園中漫遊的作品,巨大的畫面尺寸,令人印象深刻。又在中國傳統的「雙鉤填彩」法中,使用鮮艷的色彩,並加上西方繪畫光影透視的效果,呈現出華麗的面貌,有著燦爛奪目的感覺。

Lang Shih-ning was the Chinese name of the Italian Giuseppe Castiglione. At the age of 19, he became a Jesuit novitiate and studied painting and architecture. He arrived in China when he was 27 and eventually came to serve under three emperors at court. He excelled at painting figures, dogs, horses, and birds-and-flowers.
This work is a depiction of peacocks roaming about a garden. Done on a huge hanging scroll, it is indeed impressive in both size and content. In addition to the traditional Chinese technique of “outlines filled with colors”, in which opulent colors are used, Castiglione also employed Western techniques of shading and modeling. This gives the work both a decorative and a realistic touch.
